How to match Skip Trowel Texture
Skip trowel texture is applied by hand and is a lot easier to match than a sprayed on texture like knockdown . Skip trowel is also a lot less messier to apply than a most textures.

Depending on your skill as a Do it Yourselfer you most likely will be able to match your skip trowel texture on a small area. But the bigger the area that you need to match a skip trowel, the more of a DIY skill set you will need.

There are several different factors that determines how a skip trowel texture will turnout
1) The amount of water that is added to the texture material
2) How much sand was added
3) Was sand used?
4) The surface that is having the skip trowel applied to: (ie: a painted surface, new drywall, primed only, skim coated drywall finish or another type of texture that was previously applied.

How to match skip trowel texture on a small area (up to 24″x 24″):
For small wall or ceiling repairs, I have perfected the art of matching most skip trowel textures. Skip trowel can be applied in a light, medium or even a heavy consistency, depending on your existing skip trowel or the look you’re going for.
Along with my skip trowel texture kit, this texturing project will require a couple more hand tools to do be able to blend and apply the skip trowel texture.

Skip trowel tools you will need:
- Level 1 Skip trowel Texture Kit and DVD
- All purpose joint compound (I use USG green lid AP)
- Texture Masters Skip Trowel Sand (1 bag)
- Drywall Mud pan or hauk
- 6″ and 12″ Taping knife
I’ve found in my over 20 years of being a drywall contractor and painting contractor that using my texturing technique along with my modified skip trowel texturing tool and materials. I could match or at least get really close for a small area that after it was painted you couldn’t even see the repaired wall or ceiling area.
How to match skip trowel texture on a area larger than 24″x 24″ all the up to two rooms:
These areas will require a few more tools to do be able to apply the skip trowel texture.
You will need:
- Level 2 Skip Trowel Texture Kit and DVD
- Drill and paint mixing bit to thin down the joint compound
- 5 gallon bucket to mix compound in
- Texture Masters Skip Trowel Sand (1 bag (16 oz) can do up to two rooms ceilings)
- Plastic for covering and protecting
- Masking Tape
Great for DIY Skip Trowel texturing and texture matching!
How to skip trowel texture up to a whole house:
This texturing project will require a few more tools to do your custom skip trowel texture masterpiece.
You will need:
- Level 3 Skip Trowel Texture Kit and DVD
- Drill and paint mixing bit to thin down the joint compound
- 5 gallon bucket to mix compound in
- Texture Masters Skip Trowel Sand (Several bags depending on the size of your home)
- Plastic for covering and protecting
- Masking Tape
