First, I’m going to scrape any high spots where any paint build up around the shelves that have been removed. Then, I’m going to mix up some 20 minutes setting type joint compound to just do a quick skim coat over the areas where the shelves are previously been. After the joint compound dries I’ll lightly sand the area with my hundred grit drywall sanding sponge. I’m just trying to remove any little humps or bumps on the mud work. I like to use my hand to feel the area that way I know if there’s a dent or indention that needs more mud. If the area feels flat it’s time to start matching the knockdown texture with the knockdown texture sponge.

Once the knockdown texture has been applied, you’ll need to wait about 10 to 15 minutes to knock it down. Depending on the knockdown texture you’re trying to match determines how soon to knock it down. The sooner you knock it down the more flattened out The knockdown texture will look. I’ll be using a 12 inch drywall taping knife to do all the knocking down of the texture.

Once the textures dry I’m going to sand it lightly with a sanding sponge to knock off some of the roughness. Then I’ll dust off any loose debris from the repairs with a broom before I prime.

For the primer I’ll be using a product called Kilz which is oil base stain blocking primer. The reason I’m using oil base is:

1) Since there have been a roof leak above there is potential for water stains to show through even on this textured concrete wall. The Kilz prevents water stains from bleeding through the top coat of paint.

2) The Kilz oil base stain blocking primer also seals up the newly repaired and textured areas good enough to prevent any flashing or telegraphing on the wall repairs. Flashing-means how old the paint absorbs into an area differently than a previously painted area around a repair. A flashing or telegraphing area will appear like a dull spot compared to the rest of the wall. The oil base primer prevents this.

Next I use the three-quarter inch roller nap and 3″ Purdy paint brush to apply two coats of a semi gloss paint. Please leave any comments or questions in the comments section below.
