Knockdown Texture (What is it?)

“Knockdown texture is very visually pleasing and adds interest and a unique Mediterranean feel to any wall or ceiling.
Knockdown texture also know as Splatter texture is a very popular texture in many areas of the United States and around the world. Here in my area all of the general contractors that are building homes in new construction are pretty much using knockdown texture exclusively in the large new neighborhoods that are being built and have been doing so since the early 1990’s. That makes for a lot of homes that have knockdown texture on, ceilings, walls or both.
“There are millions of homes that have knockdown texture here in the United States!

Knockdown texture is applied by spraying thinned down premixed joint compound or a special ceiling and wall texture product that comes in a powder form and has to be mixed with water to get the proper consistency depending what size and thickness knockdown texture you’re trying to match or achieve.

To spray a knockdown texture on new construction or large remodel projects professional texture contractors and drywall contractors use large truck mounted texture rigs or a smaller electric commercial texture machine on smaller texturing projects or with a hopper and air compressor or by using a commercial texture machine for larger projects and contractors. It is also one of the most popular texture finishes in new construction, remodels and has been going in homes here in Brevard County since the early 1990’s.

If you’re a Do it Yourselfer that want’s to apply a knockdown texture on a ceiling repair, drywall repair, a wall that you removed wallpaper from or even just want to texture a room or two.. Then a hopper gun and compressor will probably do just fine for spraying a knockdown texture.

But, if you are going to do any more than a room or two I would recommend renting a larger texture machine from one of the big box stores or local tool rental store in your area for for around $45 a day or so.

How will my knockdown texture look?
There are several factors that determine how your knockdown texture will look after it’s applied and knocked down. One of these factors is the surface of the area that is going to be sprayed with the knockdown. Which means that the new drywall will adsorb and start drying process from underneath before it’s knocked down. Now a painted surface is just the opposite because the surface is sealed and will not absorb like the new drywall does.

Another thing that determines your knockdown is the size splatters you will be trying to achieve. This is determined by the consistency of your knockdown texture mix. If your knockdown is mixed to soupy it will just flatten out when you go to knock it down.

The type of texture machine, compressor and hopper that you use to apply the knockdown texture can also be a factor in how your knockdown texture will look after it’s applied.
Those are just a few of the factors that determine how your knockdown texture will knock down and look once the new knockdown texture on your ceilings or walls has been painted.
Knockdown texture can be applied in a light, medium or even a heavy consistency, depending on the look you’re going for…
If I’m applying a knockdown texture on both the ceilings and walls of a room or a whole house. I recommend there to be a variation of the size of splatters between the two surfaces knockdown of the ceiling texture and wall texture.
Ceiling= Half dollar to quarter size splatters
Walls= Nickel to dime size splatters
